Bio
Sydney Spruill
Dorrance on Sydney: Sydney Spruill is one of the best defensive forwards I’ve ever coached. That’s a compliment. What Sydney does so wonderfully is that she is incredibly quick and fast and she’s very brave. She really makes a big difference on the field in how hard she works for her teammates and I love her heart and what she does and if she spends time this summer organizing her skill set and committing herself to time with the ball she could also become an elite player. I’m very excited about the quality of her freshman year and her future if she decides to organize her time well in the summer.
Sophomore Year (2018): Started first two games of year at left wing, playing 62 minutes against Illinois and 22 minutes against Ohio State • missed three games due to injury before returning to roster against Kansas in NCAA second round • that injury came just as she was playing her best minutes of the season • has played in 22 games overall, totaling 506 minutes • earned first point of year with an assist on a goal by Zoe Redei in 34th minute against Marquette • scored her first goal of the season, adding an insurance tally in the 59th minute against Miami
Freshman Year (2017): Earned seven starts last season while playing in all 22 games, totaling 752 minutes • scored the game-winning goal in UNC’s 2-0 win over UNCW, tallying in the 10th minute • earned the first assist of her career in 4-0 win at Virginia Tech, getting the helper on a goal by Alea Hyatt in the 87th minute • assisted on Bridgette Andrzejewski’s game-winning goal in 1-0 win over Colorado in NCAA Tournament second round.
High School: Concentrating on club soccer, she only played one year of high school soccer at Rose High School in Greenville • 2016 high school team MVP and 2016 first-team All-State selection • played in every game her junior year while scoring 23 goals and passing for 20 assists.
Club: Played eight years of club soccer for CASL, PGSA, Orlando City and Concorde Fire • an outstanding club volleyball player who played two years for Triangle Volleyball Club and North Carolina Academy • in soccer, she was 2014 IMG Academy U16 MVP and 2015 IMG Academy U17 MVP.
Personal: Full name is Sydney Grace Spruill • daughter of Karen Spruill and Lee Spruill • stands 5-5 tall • has three siblings – Alexis Hester, age 28, Santino Spruill, age nine, and Valentino Spruill, age fiv • was born November 10, 1998 in Greenville, N.C. • her father played both tennis and soccer at East Carolina • communication major.
