General -— A three-year letter winner for the Tar Heels who continues show improvement... Carolina's only fifth-year senior in 2001... has been bothered by both illness and injury throughout her snake-bitten Tar Heel career... she hopes to get some breaks this season and truly contribute more to the team's success in her final season... also a top scholar-athlete at Carolina... missed all of last season due to injury... played in nine games as a reserve for the Tar Heels in 1999 after taking a red-shirt year in 1998... was somewhat of a surprise for the Tar Heels in 1997 as a freshman... not only earned a letter but her hustle earned her the respect of her teammates and coaches as the season wore on... she saw more and more playing time as the season progressed and ended up playing in 27 of Carolina's 28 games... missed the 1998 and 2000 seasons with an injury but is back and ready to contribute for the Tar Heels this season... an outstanding high school recruit who added depth in the Tar Heel forward line as a freshman and a sophomore... possesses a real personal success story... fought back from total incapacitation as a youth due to Lyme Disease to become a tremendous high school soccer player... it was feared the effects of her illness would be permanent.
2000 Season -- Named to the 2000-01 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.
1999 Season -— Played in nine games for the Tar Heels as a sophomore... had her best game of the year in her home state of Connecticut as she scored her only goal of the season and added in assist in UNC's win at Hartford... also had an assist in Carolina's regular-season win over Florida State... named to 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll... was selected for the Dean's List at Carolina in the spring semester 2000.
1998 Season -- Took a medical red-shirt season... she retains two full years of eligibility entering the 2000 campaign.
1997 Season -— Played in 27 games for the Tar Heels last season... scored three goals and had three assists for nine points... her goals came against N.C. State, St. Mary's and Florida State... had assists against St. Mary's, Virginia and Florida.
Prep -— Graduated from Fairfield High School on June 17, 1997... was named to 1996 National Soccer Coaches Association girls All-America Team there... played two years as a forward on the basketball team and ran track for four seasons, specializing in the 100- and 200-meters and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays... was a decorated high school soccer player... was named All-ECIAC in 1994, 1995 and 1996... was twice named to All-State and All-New England teams... was named an All-America in 1996 and Connecticut's state player of the year that year... was co-captain of high school soccer team as a senior... also won Alan Grapski Award in 1996... set all the high school scoring records in soccer... won FHS's academic-athletic excellence award... set school records in track in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay... won the Oxford Humancare Award for community service and leadership... won the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Award selected by the faculty and classmates for leadership, citizenship, scholarship and community service... was president of Varsity Athletic Association... also was secretary of Safe Rides and president of the Town Youth Council.
Personal -— Given name is Amy Whittier... has one brother and one sister... was born March 26, 1978 in Wolfboro, N.H.... daughter of Rick and Valerie Whittier... her father competed on the National Team level in ski racing and also competed collegiately in soccer and baseball... hobbies include athletics, anything outside and photography... biggest sports thrill was traveling to Europe and China with the regional team and playing in front of 15,000-20,000 people in China... exercise and sports science major... career plans include either physical therapy or a sports related medical field... regularly shows up on Dean's List at UNC and on ACC Academic Honor Roll.
