AS A SOPHOMORE (2006)
Emerged as one of the top closers in the nation • Led the ACC and ranked fourth nationally with 15 saves • Total also ranked second on Carolina's single-season list • Went 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 32 appearances, which ranked third on the staff • Converted 15 of 17 save opportunities and held opponents to a .151 batting average • Struck out 44 batters and walked just 15 over 33.2 innings • Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List • Saved two of the Tar Heels' wins at the College World Series • Struck out two in a scoreless inning against Cal State Fullerton June 16 and followed with back-to-back strikeouts to close the June 24 victory over Oregon State in the championship series • Struck out the side against Winthrop in a June 4 NCAA Regional win and earned the victory in the Tar Heels' Super Regional-clinching win at Alabama June 10 • Notched eight saves in Atlantic Coast Conference action • Posted three two-inning saves in ACC play (Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami) • Did not allow an earned run over his first 13 appearances and gave up just one over his first 22 outings • Picked up first career win with 1.2 hitless innings in 14-inning win over then-No. 7 NC State April 22 • Also saved the Tar Heels' first win over the Wolfpack April 22 • Picked up saves in both wins at then-No. 14 Miami with a combined five strikeouts in three innings • Struck out three over two scoreless innings in at Georgia Tech March 24 and fanned four over two innings versus Maryland March 19 • Earned first career save in a March 1 win over Gardner-Webb. Summer 2006: Posted a 2.45 ERA in 12 games and notched a team-high three saves for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League • Struck out 19 in 18.1 innings • Named to the league's all-star game.
AS A FRESHMAN (2005)
Made 17 appearances in a middle relief role for the Tar Heels • Posted a 3.68 earned run average and did not record a decision • Struck out 24 batters over 22 innings of work and led the team with 9.82 strikeouts per nine innings • Allowed 20 hits and walked 16 batters • Ranked third on the team in relief appearances • Held opponents to a .233 average, including a team-low .133 mark with runners on base • Did not allow a run in 12 of his 17 appearances • Struck out a career-best five batters over two shutout innings at Virginia Tech March 11 • Struck out three in 1.1 innings against Elon April 6 • Fanned three over two scoreless innings at Maryland April 8 • Also had scoreless appearances in ACC play versus Clemson, Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia Tech • Worked a season-high two innings on four occasions. Summer 2005: Pitched for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League • Went 1-2 with a 1.44 ERA and two saves • Struck out 32 in 25 innings.
NORWICH FREE ACADEMY
Four-year standout pitcher at Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Conn., under coach John Iovino • As a senior, won Gatorade and Connecticut Coaches Association state player of the year honors • Two-time all-state selection • Led team to state title as a junior, recording four wins and a save in five games • Three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference choice • Also played three years of soccer, earning all-state honors as a defender as a senior • Played one year of football • Earned high honors each semester and was a part of Project Outreach. Summer 2004: Played with Norwich American Legion • Tossed 15 consecutive no-hit innings and struck out 20 batters in a game.

Gary Andrew Carignan Jr. is the son of Gary and Lisa Carignan • Born July 23, 1986, in New London, Conn. • Has two sisters and a brother • Majoring in management and society at Carolina • Father played baseball at Florida Southern and University of New Haven • Great-Grandfather Augustine "Lefty" Dugas played for the Washington Senators and Pittsburgh Pirates. Favorite video game is Guitar Hero • Favorite teams are the Boston Red Sox and Norwich Navigators.
