Tar Heels Complete First Day of Spring Practice

March 27, 2001
The University of North Carolina football team completed its first day of spring practice on Tuesday evening. The Tar Heels worked out for two hours in sweats under the direction of new head coach John Bunting.
"It was good to get back on the field," said Bunting. "A lot of guys got a lot of reps and that's what we needed to do. We look forward to getting better every day."
unting was happy with Strength & Conditioning Director Jeff Connors' off-season conditioning program, but admitted that it would take two years before Connors' program is fully in place.
"We've made tremendous strides this off-season in terms of our conditioning," said Bunting. "However, we are a young team and we have a new system to learn on offense and defense and that will take time. We still have a long way to go."
Ronald Curry and Julius Peppers both watched practice, but did not participate in Tuesday's workouts. Neither is expected to play in the April 21st Spring Game.
Merceda Perry (ankle), Larry Jessup (shoulder), Malcolm Stewart (wrist) and Bryant Malloy (knee) did participate in practice, but wore green jerseys, limiting their contact.
