Cannizzaro Named Tar Heel Of The Week
Kara Cannizzaro of the UNC women's lacrosse team is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for May 20-26, 2013. Cannizzaro is a senior midfielder from Cazenovia, N.Y.
Cannizzaro was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player on Sunday night after leading the Tar Heels to their first national championship. She led all scorers with four goals and six points in the title game, scoring back-to-back goals late in regulation to put Carolina back ahead after Maryland had scored five consecutive goals to take the lead.
Cannizzaro also scored four goals in the NCAA semifinal victory over Northwestern on Friday evening. In four NCAA Tournament games this spring, she totaled 16 goals and 6 assists.
She set a new single-season UNC points record on Sunday night, finishing her senior year with 83 points on 61 goals and 22 assists. The 61 goals are the second-most in school history (behind Kellie Thompson's 62 in 2002).
