A tough, hard-nosed player with a good work ethic who saw extensive playing time as a freshman • One of three strong catchers battling for the starting job behind the plate • Sat out of summer ball with a shoulder injury, but should be healthy for 2002 • Has good power and swung the bat very aggressively in the fall, which should be a key to the offense.
As a Freshman (2001)
Played in 45 games, starting 31, as a freshman • Only Jeremy Cleveland saw more playing time as a rookie in 2001 • Batted .267 with one home run and 17 RBIs • Hit .345 with runners on base • Got the first two hits of his UNC career and helped spark a late comeback in the 7-6 win over Minnesota on Feb. 18 at the Coca-Cola Classic in Alabama; singled and scored in the eighth inning and his RBI double in the ninth tied the game at 6-6 after UNC had trailed 6-2 entering the final two innings • Had a two-run triple three days later in a win over High Point • Provided Carolina's only runs with a two-run homer in the second game of a doubleheader with UCLA on March 2 • Had one of six four-hit games by a Tar Heel in 2001 with a 4-for-5 outing in the first game of a doubleheader at NC State on April 2; had three singles an RBI double and scored twice in that 16-7 victory • Had three hits in the Virginia series (April 13-15) and again in three games versus Duke (April 20-22) • Played well in the Georgia Tech series (May 11-13), batting 4-for-9 with an RBI and one run in two games. Summer 2001: Batted .220 in 18 games for the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League.
St. John the Baptist High School
Was a four-year catcher at St. John the Baptist • One of Baseball America's Top 100 high school baseball players • Named New York's top HS player by Baseball America and was also named the 2000 Gatorade New York Player of the Year • All-Long Island all four years of high school • League MVP • Played for the 15- and 16-year-old U.S. National Team and won two gold medals • An honor roll student. Summer 2000: Batted .410 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs for the Long Island Tigers of the NABF.
