First-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America • Blossomed into one of the top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference as sophomore, earning first-team All-ACC honors at second base • Coming off an outstanding summer with the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League, where he was named the CCBL’s top professional prospect • Also earned MVP honors at the Cape's All-Star game after belting a three-run homer and leading the East to a 10-1 win • A very athletic player who has speed and a great sense for the game • Very driven and a terrific influence on his teammates in the offseason • Has a very business-like approach to the game • Can play at second or shortstop.
As a Sophomore (2001) Selected first-team All-ACC, the first Tar Heel second baseman to be named first-team all-conference since 1979 • Was one of just two Tar Heels to start all 57 games and was among the team leaders in virtually all offensive categories, including batting average (.331, 3rd), at bats (239, 1st), runs (52, T-1st), hits (79, 1st), doubles (13, T-2nd), RBIs (41, 2nd), walks (28, 3rd) and stolen bases (28, 2nd) • Named the team's most valuable player • One of Carolina’s top clutch hitters, batting .444 (4-for-9) with the bases loaded • He also had three-game winning hits — a three-run triple in the ninth versus James Madison on Feb. 11; an RBI single in the ninth against Minnesota on Feb. 18 and a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning against UCLA on March 2 • Tied a career high with a nine-game hitting streak from April 21-May 2 • Had 23 multiple-hit games, including six with three hits and two with four • Was 4-for-10 with two runs and two RBIs in three games at the Coca Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala. • Was 3-for-5, including two doubles, with two RBIs and two runs in a Feb. 21 win over High Point • Was 3-for-5 and stole a career-high three bases in the series-opening win over Le Moyne on March 9 • Had a two-out RBI double in the top of the eighth to tie the game 9-9 at Coastal Carolina in a contest UNC won 12-9 • Was outstanding at FSU, batting 7-for-13 (.538) with three RBIs and two runs; had three-hit games on Saturday and Sunday at Tallahassee; started the scoring in Carolina’s five-run sixth inning on Saturday with an RBI single and later scored himself in the inning; doubled in his next at bat; had three singles in UNC's 8-7, series-ending loss to the Seminoles; drove in two runs in a four-run third inning that gave UNC an early lead in that game against FSU • Was 7-for-16 (.438) in three games at NC State (March 30-April 2) and scored a team-high six times in the series; tied a career-high with four hits in the first game of the April 2 doubleheader with the Wolfpack; scored all four times he was on base in that game for a new career high in runs scored • Batted 9-for-15 (.600) with six RBIs and four runs scored in three games at Maryland; tied a career-high with four hits in Saturday's loss to the Terps and drove in three runs, including a two-out, RBI double as UNC tried to rally in the top of the ninth; also drove in a run on each of his three singles in Sunday's win • Began a nine-game hitting streak on April 21 versus Duke; tied a season-high with three RBIs in that game; was 2-for-4 in the series-finale with the Blue Devils • Had an RBI single and stole two bases in the April 25 win over UNC Greensboro • Had four hits in the Clemson series (April 27-29) and stole two bases in the series opener; had a two-run single in Carolina's five-run fourth inning in Saturday's extra-inning loss against the Tigers • Went hitless against Georgia Tech on May 11 to snap nine-game hitting streak but hit safely in the final four games of the year to finish with hits in 13 of the last 14 games of the season • Was 3-for-7 and drew three walks in two ACC Tournament games. Summer 2001: Had an outstanding summer with the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod League • Earned the 2001 Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award and was named MVP of the Cape’s mid-summer All-Star game • Batted .281 and ranked among the Cape leaders with 48 hits, 27 runs and 23 stolen bases • His three-run home run helped the East team to a 10-1 win over the West in the All-Star game • He also played for the Cape in an All-Star game with the New England Collegiate League All-Stars on July 28 and went 2-for-2 with a solo homer in a 5-2 Cape Cod win.
As a Freshman (2000)
Started 37 games • Saw majority of time early in the season at third base, but shifted late in the year and started the final 10 regular-season games at second • Ranked third on the team with 20 stolen bases and fifth among Tar Heel regulars with a .322 batting average • Went 1-for-2 and scored two runs in his first college game, a 9-6 win over Central Florida • Was 3-for-4 and scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning of the 2-1 win over Richmond on March 12 • Started one of three games against NC State (March 24-26) and was 2-for-5 at the plate • Had a pinch hit two-run single in the ninth inning as Carolina rallied in the series opener on March 24 • Started twice in the Clemson series (March 31-April 2) and batted 4-for-7 (.571) • Got Carolina's first hit, a single in the fifth inning, of the 6-0 series-opening win over the Tigers • Finished that game 2-for-3, the only Tar Heel to notch more than one hit in the game against Clemson ace Scott Berney • Hit in the first two games of the Wake Forest series (April 7-9) to push career-long hitting streak to nine games before going hitless in the series finale • Was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs in the series opener at Duke (April 27) • Was excellent at the plate in his first ACC Tournament, batting 4-for-8 with a double and a run scored • Was 3-for-4 playing DH and first base in the 4-1 quarterfinal loss to Florida State on May 19 • Was 2-for-8 (.250) playing three of four games in the NCAA Tournament at DH and first base • Helped ignite Carolina's offense in the 14-5 win over Penn State on May 27 with a two-run double in a five-run third inning. Summer 2000: Played for the Durham Braves of the Coastal Plain League • Batted .257, had one home run, 13 RBIs and stole 20 bases • Was named a CPL All-Star.

Played baseball, football, basketball and golf at Scotland High • Helped lead Scotland to the conference championship in both 1998 and 1999 • Named all-state and all-conference as a senior • Conference player of the year after hitting .498 as a senior • Voted to the Charlotte Observer's all-star team as a senior • A State Games participant in 1997 and 1998 • two-time all-conference golfer • Two-time all-conference quarterback • Team's MVP as a junior and senior and led conference in passing yards for two years • A National Honor Society member and was an honor roll student • Named a Pepsi Scholar-Athlete.
