General: Considered one of the best face-off men in the country...a preseason first-team All-America selection by Face-Off Yearbook/Inside Lacrosse...named preseason All-ACC face-off specialist by Face-Off Yearbook/Inside Lacrosse...creates a lot of problems for opposing teams by helping the Tar Heels keep possession of the ball...a strong and physical player...holds the school record for most face-offs won in a career with 454...broke Kevin Frew's school record of 446 by winning 13 in the 2008 season finale against Navy...has won 15 of more face-offs in a game 11 times in his career...has the school record for face-offs won in a season with 222 in 2007, breaking Kevin Frew's previous record of 219...has a career face-off winning percentage of .606.
2008 Season (Junior): His face-off winning percentage of .682 was the second best in a single season in UNC history...because of an injury, he was limited to nine games, seven of which he started...won 118 of 173 face-offs, a winning percentage of .682 ...tied the school record for ground balls in a game with 15 against Ohio State...that is the fifth time in history a Tar Heel player has scooped up that many in a game...also had 11 ground balls against Bellarmine in the season opener and nine each against Virginia and Hofstra...his 64 ground balls were the second highest total on the team...a preseason first-team All-America selection by Face-Off Yearbook/Inside Lacrosse at the face-off specialist position ...named preseason All-ACC face-off specialist by Face-Off Yearbook/Inside Lacrosse ...broke the school record for face-offs won in a game with 23 against Ohio State...that broke the old record of 22 set by Todd Oudemool against Towson in 1989...was an amazing 23 of 26 on face-offs against the Buckeyes...a week later he won 20 of 25 face-offs against Hofstra...those 20 wins were the third most in a game in Tar Heel history...won 10 or more face-offs in a game six times...was 14 of 23 against Virginia, 13 of 19 against Navy and 12 of 18 against Bellarmine...had assists in the final two games of the season against Duke and Navy.
2007 Season (Sophomore): Set a school record for face-offs won in a season...his 222 wins in 367 attempts broke the school record set by Kevin Frew in 2004 at 219...led the team and the ACC with 113 ground balls...was the Holmes Harden, Sr., Memorial Ground Ball Award winner for UNC...named ACC Player of the Week February 26, 2007 after a pair of dominant face-off performances against Denver and Dartmouth...was No. 4 in the nation in ground balls per game at 7.06...was No. 12 nationally in face-off percentage at .605...had a season-high 13 ground balls against Dartmouth...won a season-high 19 face-offs against the Big Green and his .904 face-off percentage in that game was his career best...was also in double figures in ground balls with 11 against Providence and 10 in the NCAA quarterfinals against Duke...scored both of his goals in the 2007 season in the NCAA game against Duke, one on the last play of the first quarter and the other on the first play of the second quarter...won 14 or more face-offs in a game an astonishing 11 times in 16 games...was under 50 percent in the face-off circle against only Ohio State and Notre Dame.
2006 Season (Freshman): Won the team's Holmes Harden, Sr. Memorial Award for claiming the most ground balls during the season with 64...won a season-high 16 face-offs against Fairfield...was one of the nation's best face-off men, winning 114 of 209 tries for a percentage of .545...had a season-high ground ball total of eight versus both Duke and Fairfield ...also had seven ground balls against Maryland in the regular-season game and six each against Air Force, Johns Hopkins and Providence...scored goals in three successive games against Johns Hopkins, Virginia and Fairfield...his leading number of face-off wins included 16 versus Fairfield, 14 versus Duke and 10 versus Maryland in the ACC Tournament...won 80 percent of his draws against Fairfield...other top percentage games included 14 of 20 wins against Duke and nine of 14 wins against Hofstra.
Prep: A June 2005 graduate of The Boys' Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore...played three years of varsity lacrosse as a midfielder and face-off man...also played three years of football as a tailback...led his lacrosse team his senior year to an 18-2 record and the No. 6 ranking in the nation...was lacrosse team captain for two years...Maryland Free State Team member...second-team Baltimore Sun All-Metro and All-City/County as a junior...second-team All-State as a senior...selected to play in Maryland senior all-star game...played on football team which won three straight conference championships...named Baltimore Sun and FOX45 student-athlete of the week after running for 303 yards and four touchdowns against Polotti...made Baltimore Super 22 Team for top rising senior football players in the state...second-team All-Metro selection as a junior...rushed for 1,384 yards and scored 17 touchdowns...captained team as a senior but broke leg in third game of the season, cutting his final year short ...senior class president...member of Boys' Latin Honor Board.
