General: Tri-captain of the 2000-2001 Tar Heels...1999-00 Tri-Captain as well...three-year letter winner...has great versatility in terms of the kinds of events and distances he can swim...recorded personal bests in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events as a freshman...as a sophomore, he began to swim mainly middle distance freestyle events...as a junior, excelled in the mid-distance freestyle as well as the breastroke events...has become a force in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyles...can also swim the individual medley and the breastroke.
1999-2000: At the 2000 ACC Championships, earned All-ACC honors with his second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a lifetime best of 4:23.61, also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a personal best of 1:38.61, placed ninth in the 200 breastroke with yet another lifetime best of 2:01.97, and was a member of the UNC 400 free relay that finished fifth and the 800 free relay that finished second…his time in the 500 free ranked as the sixth-best performance ever by a Tar Heel in that event, his time in the 200 breast placed him tenth all-time…made the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.
1998-99: Member of the 1998 Nike Cup champion 800-yard freestyle team...at the 1999 ACC Championships, he finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke, also a member of UNC’s 200 medley and 800 free relays, each of which finished third...was also a member of the 200 medley relay that set a school record (1:28.27)…qualified for the 1999 NCAA Championships, finishing 39th in the 500-yard freestyle...tapped for Dean's List in fall semester of 1998.
1997-98: Was the team’s winner of the Jamerson Memorial Most Improved Swimmer Award...scored 42 points at the ACC Championships...was a key player in leading the Tar Heels to their sixth successive conference title...finished ninth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.97), ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.43) and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.11)...also a member of the ACC championship winning 400-yard medley relay team which set a school record at 3:15.08...was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection...met the NCAA consideration time in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Prep: Graduated on June 6, 1997 from Providence Senior High School...swam for the PSHS team for four years and for the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club for seven years...swam on a MAC team which won the 1996 junior national team championship...was a member of 1996 junior national champion 400 freestyle relay team with MAC...led MAC to four North Carolina state team titles...he won 13 individual state titles and three zone crowns while at MAC...at the 1997 junior nationals, he finished second in the 100 breaststroke, fourth in the 200 breaststroke and 10th in the 200 freestyle...he also led Providence to a pair of state high school team titles...won three individual state high school titles and four state high school relay crowns...was an All-County and All-Conference choice each of his four years in high school...also a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and the Civitans.
Personal: Given name is Bradley Philip Kline...nicknames include "Big Bad Brad", “Gladiator”, “Viper” and “Hollywood”...has one sister, Amanda, who is a freshman swimmer for Carolina...was born August 5, 1979 in Highland Park, Ill....is the son of Phil and Susan Kline...hobbies include beating Stephen Mohr in exam attendance, ballyhoo, tomfoolery, entering dance contests and admiring himself in the mirror...athletes he most admires are Larry Bird, Dave Lohse and the Cleveland Steamers...his biggest sports thrill was winning the 1998 ACC championship...was also thrilled by both his own performance and that of the team in the 2000 ACC Championship...he called that a great team effort...claims to be the best basketball player on the team...journalism and mass communication major...wants to pursue a career in sports broadcasting…says he is a little worried about what will become of the women’s team after he graduates and is no longer able to be their head recruiter...also is concerned about having to pass on the mantle of the team’s best basketball player to someone else in another year.
