General: A three-time returning letterman...one of the most talented and versatile swimmers on the Carolina team...qualified for 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in 200 IM and 200 breaststroke...swims breaststroke, individual medley, and distance freestyle...has won five junior national individual championships and was the junior national high point scorer in the winter of 1994...named to 1995, 1996 and 1997 U.S. Swimming men’s scholastic All-America Team...has maintained an impressive 3.241 GPA at Carolina.
1999-2000: At the 1999 Nike Cup, he was the Nike Cup champion in the 400 IM (3:53.04), also the runner-up in the 200 IM and 200 breast…At the 200 ACC Championships, finished second in the 200 breast (1:58.95), the third-fastest clocking ever for a Tar Heel, fourth in the 400 IM, and sixth in the 200 IM (1:49.84), the ninth best performance ever for a UNC swimmer…an All-ACC selection…qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM…At the 2000 NCAA Championships, earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with his 15th place finish in the 200 breast, also finished 24th in the 400 IM and 38th in the 200 IM.
1998-99: At the 1999 ACC Championships, he finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, seventh in the 400-yard individual medley and 12th in the 200-yard individual medley...named to 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.
1997-98: Scored 23 points at the ACC meet...finished seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (3:59.04) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.60)...named to 1997-98 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Prep: Graduated on June 17, 1997 from East Brunswick High School...competed in four years of varsity swimming there...captained team his senior year...specialized in 200 IM and 500 free...a high school All-America three straight years in those two events...swam for Scarlet Aquatic Club for seven years in distance, IM and breaststroke events...qualified for National Junior Team, representing USA in Paris in May 1996...played soccer from 1992-94 as a halfback...National Honor Society member...graduated with a 4.2 GPA...three-time scholastic All-America.
Personal: Given name is David Charles Slawinski...has one sister...was born April 15, 1979 in New Brunswick, N.J....son of Ken and Barbara Slawinski...hobbies include being the house champion at International Soccer for Nintendo 64, hockey, music and reading...also says that competing at the 1996 Olympic Trials was one of his biggest thrills...says the pressure was amazing and the competition was so fierce for such a coveted spot on the U.S. Olympic Team...athletes he most admires is Marcelo Rios and Sergei Federov...at winter 1994 junior nationals, he colored his hair blue and won his first two events...was thrilled swimming in a meet with that much pressure and prestige....when he got third place in his next event, he shaved his head and went on to win his last event and the high point championship...biology major...wants a career in dentistry as an orthodontist.
