Co-captain of the 2003-04 Tar Heels...Carolina school record holder in the 1000-yard freestyle at 9:09.52 and in the 1650-yard freestyle at 15:05.10...ranks fourth in UNC history in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:19.92 and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:38.00...has had three outstanding Carolina seasons…broke the Carolina school record in the 1000 free (9:09.59) as a freshman, a mark previously held by former Olympian Yann deFabrique...established the UNC record in the 1650 free at NCAAs his junior year…swam for the Curl-Burke Swim Club for five years under coach Rick Curl… at the 2000 spring nationals he was a finalist in the 800 free and was also part of the 800 free relay that placed first…also a finalist at one of the 2000 World Cup Meets in the 400 and 1500 frees…member of Curl Burke team that won the 2000 men’s and overall national championships...a top student-athlete at UNC.
2002-03:
An honorable mention All-America in 2003 in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle...he took 13th in the 500 free at NCAAs with a time of 4:19.92...also took 13th place in the 1650-yard freestyle with a UNC school record time of 15:05.10...also finished 40th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.73...was also outstanding at the 2003 ACC Championships...2003 All-ACC selection...captured the championship in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:38.00...also finished third in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:20.12 and seventh in the 1650-yard freestyle at 15:21.79...he anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay team which placed second...named a 2003 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar...won the Jamerson Memorial Award as the team’s most outstanding swimmer in 2002-03...named to the 2002-03 ACC Academic Honor Roll...was also tapped for the UNC Dean’s List in both semesters of the 2002-03 school year.
Summer 2002:
Set UNC record in 800-meter freestyle at U.S. Championships with time of 8;12.50...broke the old school record set by Marc Ferguson in 1989 by more than two seconds...finished fifth in the 800 free in the process...was 12th in the 1500-meter free and 14th in the 400-meter free...qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials in all three events. 2001-02:
Awarded an CSCAA Academic All-America Award with 3.522 GPA...garnered Dean’s List accolades in fall semester of 2001...also made Dean’s List in the spring...2002 ACC Academic Honor Roll...2002 NCAA qualifer where he finished 23rd in the 500 free...at the 2002 ACC meet he was member of 800 FR which took third place...individually he placed fourth in the 1650 free, sixth in the 200 free, and ninth in 500 free.
Summer 2001:
Had some outstanding swims at the June Santa Clara Grand Prix Meet...placed sixth in three events (400m free, 800m free, 1500m free) and was 13th in the 200-meter free...at the USS Sectional meet in Baltimore, he placed ninth in the 200 free and 18th in the 100 free...at the U.S. Nationals in Clovis, Calif., he copped 16th place in the 800-meter freestyle, 23rd place in the 1500-meter free and 19th in the 400-meter freestyle.
2000-2001:
Voted most outstanding swimmer on the men’s team...first-team All-ACC…at the 2001 ACC Championships, he finished second in the 500 free (4:22.26), sixth in the 200 free and seventh in the mile (15:16.51)...he led off the 800 free relay that finished second at the meet…his performance in the mile ranked as the fifth best performance ever for a Tar Heel, and his time in the 500 free ranked sixth among Carolina swimmers all-time...named ACC Swimmer of the Week on November 6, 2000 and November 20, 2000…also an exceptional student, garnered Dean’s List honors both semesters of his freshman year and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Prep:
Graduated on June 8, 2000 from Urbana High School….swam for his high school team his freshman and senior years…was the 1997 Frederick County Swimmer of the Year…was the 2000 Metropolitan/DC area champion in the 200 and 500 free…was a United States Swimming and Potomac Valley scholar athlete…member of the National Honor Society.

Given name is Yuri Fumio Suguiyama…also goes by “The Rock” and “Lumber Jack”…born on September 15, 1982 in Raleigh, N.C.…is the son of Luis and Laura Suguiyama…his father was a All America soccer player for Warren Wilson College…has one sister…hobbies include cheering for the New York Rangers…athletes he most admires are Tom Dolan, Lance Armstrong, Mark Messier and Cal Ripken Jr…his biggest sports thrill was swimming on the national champion 800 free relay for Curl-Burke at the 2000 spring nationals…says he has a “barrel chest” which he claims allows him to be the strongest member on the team...double majors in political science and economics.
