Nunzio Esposto, a 1991 alumnus of the University of North Carolina, begins his fourth year as the diving coach for both the University team and for the North Carolina Aquatic Club, the U.S. Diving club team based in Chapel Hill.
Esposto’s position was elevated to full-time status a year ago, the first time the Tar Heel program has had a full-time diving coach.
Esposto stays active as a competitor as well. He enjoys competing in Masters Nationals Diving Competitions. This past summer in the United States Diving Master’s Nationals in Mission Viejo, Calif., he placed first on 1 meter, 3 meter, platform, and synchronized diving. He competed with Todd Mulzet of Rose Bowl Aquatics in the synchronized event.
Since beginning his coaching career, Esposto has had divers win North Carolina state high school championships who have then earned All-America honors. He also has coached U.S. Junior National qualifiers and Senior National qualifiers. This past summer at Junior Nationals he coached a finalist in the boys’ 13 and Under platform event. Two of his current UNC divers, Rob McMillen and Jennifer Rehm, were former NCAC divers.
Esposto worked as a lead radiation therapist at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh prior to coaching. In August of 1992, he earned a Radiation Therapy degree from UNC. He attended Carolina from 1987-1991 on an athletic scholarship, winning honors as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference diver for four years. As a senior, he competed at the NCAA Championships. He was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for three years at Carolina and was a member of three ACC championship teams at UNC.
He is a 1987 alumnus of Butler High School in Butler, Pa, and was inducted in 1998 into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame. At Butler High School, he was a three time All-America and a Pennsylvania state high school diving champion in 1985 and 1987. He was also an 11 time Junior National finalist for Pitt Aquatic Club.
Nunzio and his wife, the former Theresa Seatrom, live in Durham. Theresa was also a star diver for the Tar Heels, graduating in 1992. Nunzio and Theresa are the proud parents of two children, Erik, age seven, and Maria, age three.
