Chelsea Pemberton joined the North Carolina rowing staff in the fall of 2012 and serves as head coach of the novice program. A former rower at the University of Tennessee, she has served as novice coach and recruiting coordinator at Bucknell and Alabama since graduating from UT in 2005.
"We are very excited to have Chelsea here at UNC," Tar Heel coach Sarah Haney said at the time of Pemberton's hiring. "Our novice program is an integral part of our success and we are lucky to have Chelsea join us. She brings a great track record of success, both as a coach and as a collegiate rower."
Before coming to UNC, Pemberton spent a year at Bucknell, where she managed all aspects of recruiting and coached the novice program. Prior to joining the Bison staff, she spent two years at Alabama in a similar role. She also has coached masters-level rowers in Boston since 2007 and coached at the Smoky Mountain Rowing Center in Maryville, Tenn., in 2008-09.
A former member of the U.S. Junior National Team, Pemberton was a three-time All-America at Tennessee and the school's Rowing Athlete of the Year in 2004.
"Development of novice rowers is a key to our program," Haney said, "and Chelsea's coaching philosophy matches Carolina's."
