Bio
HANNA GARDNER
Dorrance on Hanna: She is a veteran defender. She is the last national champion on the roster. She was a starter for us at left back her freshman year when we won the national championship. She has loads of experience. She could be a significant organizational presence for us in the back. She’s very good in the air. She’s very hard working and combative. She certainly has the experience and the ability to lead my defense.
Redshirt Senior Year (2016): 2016 team captain • projected as the starting right back in UNC’s 4-2-3-1 configuration • lone holdover from UNC’s 2012 NCAA championship team • Veteran Leader in Carolina Leadership Academy.
Redshirt Junior Year (2015): Named to Dean’s List in both semesters of 2015-16 school year • winner of UNC Athletic Director's Scholar Athlete of Year award for women's soccer • 2015-16 ACC Academic Honor Roll selection • missed opening part of 2015 season due to knee injury which required two surgeries in 2014 calendar year • saw her first action of the season against Nebraska • started against Nebraska, UCLA, Duke, Liberty and Texas A&M • one of four Tar Heels to go all 90 minutes in NCAA first round win over Liberty • played 754 minutes in 15 games as she worked her way back into the lineup • had a season high 90 minutes versus Liberty as well as 71 mindutes versus Texas A&M, 64 minutes versus Duke and 62 minutes in ACC Tournament versus Florida State • had the primary assist on Jessie Scarpa’s insurance goal in 3-1 win over Syracuse.
Junior Year (2014): Redshirted during the 2014 season • underwent knee surgery twice in calendar year with the anticipation of her being ready for the 2015 season • she initally underwent knee surgery four weeks before the 2014 season opener but was limited to just 248 minutes played in five games, all starting nods • a second surgery was required so the decision was made to shut her down before the start of the ACC campaign • that move retained her ability to apply for a medical redshirt • named to 2014-15 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Sophomore Year (2013): Second-year starter for the Tar Heels at defense • moved to the center back spot in the 3-4-3 with Caitlin Ball out of the lineup late in the year • manned the center defender slots with Katie Bowen in the 4-2-3-1 formation • second on the team in minutes played with 1,986 • played in 26 games and earned starting nods on 18 occasions • recorded an assist on the game-winning goal versus Duke with a throw in • tapped for 2013-14 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Freshman Year (2012): One of the great success stories in college soccer as a freshman • did not make travel team for season opener at Portland, a game in which two-year starter Megan Brigman broke her leg four minutes into the match • she entered the starting lineup the following Friday versus Florida and played virtually every minute the remainder of the campaign • started the final 22 games and played 2,015 minutes, the second highest total on the team • scored two game-winning goals • notched the game-winner in the 4-0 win at Clemson • scored less than a minute into the second half of the national championship game versus Penn State • her goal, which came off a header on a corner kick, put UNC up 2-1 en route to a 4-1 triumph • All-ACC Freshman Team selection • first-team Soccer America All-Freshman Team selection • second-team Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Team of the Season honoree • named to 2012-13 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
