Carolina Drops Wingate In First Dress Rehearsal
November 1, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - A game-high 21 points from senior Jamie Cherry led four players in double figures for North Carolina in an 84-62 exhibition victory over Wingate on Wednesday night from Carmichael Arena.
After Cherry's 21 points and six assists, Taylor Koenen added 19 points, Paris Kea had 18 points and six assists and Janelle Bailey tossed in 12 points.
Marta Miscenko led Wingate with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Caroline Everette had 11 points.
Pressure defense and transition buckets fueled an 11-0 run that helped put Carolina ahead 38-21 in the second quarter. Koenen, the second-year guard from Savage, Minnesota, led Carolina with 12 points in the first half, but it was her block at the end of the half that sent the teams into the locker room with the Tar Heels up 40-25 over the Bulldogs.
UNC led by a slim 21-18 margin after 10 minutes, but 12 Wingate turnovers were turned into 13 points alone in the second period.
Wingate pulled within eight, 48-40, with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but a bucket from Kea got UNC back in gear. Later, a baseline runner from Jaelynn Murray off a pretty feed from Cherry put Carolina back in front by double figures, and it remained that way heading to the final quarter with Carolina up 58-45.
The Tar Heels made eight field goals in a row to blow it wide open in the fourth quarter. Naomi Van Nes dropped in two points to put UNC up 80-55. Murray followed with consecutive buckets to go ahead by as many as 27 points in the final minutes.
UNC shot 63 percent in the second half, and 53.1 percent (34-of-64) for the game. The Tar Heels were also an efficient 7-for-13 from beyond the arc and Cherry made 9-of-10 free throws to account for all of her team's charity stripe attempts.
Carolina hosts its second and final exhibition against Mount Olive on Monday at 6 p.m.
