November 16, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's basketball team put forth a strong defensive effort during a 79-46 victory over Radford on Thursday night inside Carmichael Arena.
Freshman Janelle Bailey notched her first career double-double with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds, while Paris Kea added 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Sophomore Emily Sullivan scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter, and senior Jamie Cherry added 10 points and a game-high six assists and four steals.
Destinee Walker led Radford (1-1) with 12 points.
North Carolina (2-1) gave up its fewest points in a game since an 82-49 win over South Carolina State last December 30. Radford, the preseason pick to win the Big South, was limited to 25.0 percent shooting and turned the ball over 22 times.
Carolina's stifling defense held the Highlanders scoreless for 11 minutes, six seconds during the first half. Kea, the ACC's leading scorer had 14 points at intermission to pace the Tar Heels, who led 31-17 at halftime.
Thanks to a strong effort from Sullivan in the final moments, the Newburgh, Indiana, product helped Carolina seal the win by outscoring Radford, 27-14, in the fourth quarter. The lead extended out to as many as 33 points on Sullivan's last of five buckets in the final 2:41 of the game.
Carolina shot a season-best 54.0 percent from the field, and shot 78.6% from the charity stripe, making 22-of-28 attempts.
