November 19, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Despite a heroic effort by Paris Kea with 31 points and 11 assists, North Carolina was upended, 85-84, to South Alabama on Sunday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena.
Kea, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading scorer, was 12-of-19 from the floor and finished one point shy of tying her career-high set last season against Minnesota.
Freshman Janelle Bailey had another efficient game with 17 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, and five rebounds before fouling out with 4:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Taylor Koenen and red-shirt freshman Jocelyn Jones each contributed 12 points.
Chyna Ellis led South Alabama (2-1) with a career-high 23 points, while Savannah Jones added 22 points off the bench, and Shaforia Kines had 17.
Ellis, a preseason first team All-Sun Belt selection, scored the final bucket of the game on a layup with 5.0 seconds remaining. Jamie Cherry's last second three-pointer to win the game was off target for the Tar Heels.
South Alabama benefitted from making 13 three-pointers, offsetting a 42-32 Tar Heel advantage in paint points.
A pair of free throws by Kea had UNC up 79-73, but the Jaguars proved difficult to put away all game long. Back-to-back triples tied the game at 79-79, but Koenen answered with a 3-pointer of her own to put Carolina in the drivers seat.
Emily Sullivan's put back made it 84-81, but USA scored the final four points to seal the win.
Jones, a reserve rookie, didn't miss a shot in scoring 14 points in the first quarter, staking South Alabama to a 22-15 lead after 10 minutes. The sharp shooter was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and made all three of shots from distance.
USA still held a 31-23 edge into the second quarter, but a quick 8-0 Carolina spurt knotted the game up at 31-31 midway through the period. The score wound up tied on three more occasions, including a 37-37 score at halftime.
Behind a 10-point effort from Kea in the third quarter, Carolina exploded for 27 points in the period to take a 64-57 lead heading into the final stanza. Bailey scored the initial six points of the period, and then handed it off to Kea who was dominant in having a double-double before starting the final 10 minutes of the game.
