Balanced Scoring Propels UNC Over Seahawks

CHAPEL HILL - Jamie Cherry led five double-digit scorers with 21 points to lead North Carolina to an 86-60 victory over UNCW on Wednesday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena.
Cherry not only scored a game-high 21 points, but also handed out six assists and came up with five steals for North Carolina (3-2). Freshman Janelle Bailey, the reigning ACC Rookie of the Week, had 16 points, Jocelyn Jones had 14 points, Taylor Koenen added 12 points and Paris Kea had 10 points and handed out eight assists against zero turnovers.
Jenny DeGraaf led UNCW (2-2) with 18 points, while Madison Raque had 16.
Carolina waisted no time in getting into a good shooting groove against the Seahawks. An 18-2 run that spanned over seven minutes of the first quarter allowed the Tar Heels to gain a 24-9 edge after one period of play.
UNCW fell behind by as many as 23 points in the opening half, but a 12-0 scoring spurt got the visitors within 34-23 on a bucket from Grace Sacco with 3:25 remaining until halftime.
However, Carolina closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run that was capped off by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Leah Church, sending a season-high crowd of 2,823 fans buzzing into the intermission with UNC ahead 44-25.
Carolina pushed its advantage to as many as 31 points early in the fourth quarter and cruised to victory. The Tar Heels shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the field and assisted on 26 of their 36 made baskets.
UNC also swiped a season-best 13 steals, forced 25 turnovers that led to 32 points for the Tar Heels.
Carolina hosts Minnesota next Wednesday as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip time on ACC Network Extra is 3:30 p.m.
