Six Double-Figure Scorers Pace Carolina Past Trojans
November 6, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Preseason All-ACC guard Paris Kea put her terrific all-around game on display Monday night in leading North Carolina to a 102-47 victory over Mount Olive in an exhibition women's basketball game from Carmichael Arena.
Kea had a game-high 22 points and eight assists, and also hauled in seven rebounds and had six steals in 30 minutes of work. Senior Jamie Cherry and freshman Janelle Bailey each tossed in 16 points with Bailey adding nine boards.
The balanced attack continued with 13 points from Jocelyn Jones and Jaelynn Murray, and 12 more from Taylor Koenen. Murray registered a double-double with 12 rebounds to go with her baker's dozen point total.
The Tar Heels caught fire late in the first quarter to open up a double-digit lead over the Trojans. Carolina knocked down five straight buckets at one point, and Kea scored the final five points of the quarter to give her club a 30-18 edge after 10 minutes.
Murray stepped back for a triple to get the second quarter going for the Tar Heels, who bridged the first two periods with a 12-0 run to lead by 17 points, 35-18.
A three-pointer from Koenen just before the halftime buzzer lifted Carolina to a comfortable 51-31 lead at intermission.
UNC scorched the nets to the tune of 61.9 percent shooting in the third quarter to extend the lead out to 83-43. Liz Roberts drained a base-line jumper and then knocked down a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions. She finished with eight points on the evening.
Felecity Havens led the Trojans with 21 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in the third.
Mount Olive, picked fourth in the Conference Carolinas (Division II) preseason poll, is coached by Wendy Lee, the wife of Billy Lee, who serves as the Special Assistant to Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell.
North Carolina officially opens the 2017-18 season against Hampton on Friday with a tip time of 3:30 p.m.
