CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell earned career victory No. 998 with an 84-56 victory over Furman. The Tar Heels extended their winning streak to six games by topping the Paladins on Sunday afternoon.
Paris Kea led three North Carolina (8-2) players in double figures scoring with 20 points and nine assists, while Taylor Koenen had 16 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double and Janelle Bailey added 12 points.
Jaelynn Murray ripped down 12 boards to help UNC dominate the glass to the tune of a 46-29 edge over the Paladins.
Celena Taborn paced Furman (7-3) with a game-high 24 points and Le'Jzae Davidson had 13.
A 9-0 run and a buzzer-beating, 25-foot three-pointer from Cherry gave Carolina a 21-9 lead over the Paladins after 10 minutes of game action.
The Heels continued its scoring onslaught in the second quarter by putting up 30 points and led 51-20 at intermission. Kea has 13 points and seven assists as Carolina shot 52.5 percent in the half.
Before the game, Bailey was presented with her trophy for being named the 2017 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year. The Matthews, North Carolina, native led the United States to a gold medal at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup in China. Bailey led all players in the 20-team tournament in scoring, and had a team-high 11 points in the 21-14 gold-medal win against Czech Republic.
The Tar Heels head to Myrtle Beach next week for its annual trip to the beach for games against Washington on Sunday and Grambling State on Tuesday.
