December 17, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - Career victory No. 999 for North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell came at a familiar setting for her program on Sunday. Playing in Myrtle Beach for the 24th consecutive season, a career-high 33 points from Paris Kea gave UNC a 90-78 victory over Washington.
Hatchell will go for win No. 1000 on Tuesday here at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center against Grambling State at 2 p.m. Tuesday could shape up as one for the history books for the sport of basketball as UConn's Geno Auriemma also has the opportunity to win his 1000th game when his Huskies host Oklahoma that same night at 7 p.m.
North Carolina (9-2) has won seven games in a row, its longest winning streak since putting together a 9-game streak in the 2014-15 season.
Kea led the way, but she didn't do it alone as senior guard Jamie Cherry added a season-high 28 points and freshman forward Janelle Bailey had 19 points. The Tar Heel trio combined for 80 of the team's 90 points and shot a collective 29-of-40 from the field.
Kea is the only player in the ACC to have multiple games with 30 or more points this season.
Amber Melgoza led Washington (5-5) with 25 points and Mai-Loni Henson added 15.
Carolina's high-scoring offense registered its third 90-point game in the last five outings.
An up tempo first 10 minutes saw Washington hold a slim 25-23 lead behind 12 points from Melgoza. The Tar Heels shot an efficient 64.3 percent from the floor, but seven turnovers led directly to nine points for the Pac-12 Huskies.
UW pulled ahead 33-26 early in the second quarter, but from that point on Carolina dominated the period. The Tar Heels tied the game up at 37-37, and continued its fine play by going into halftime with a 50-42 advantage. When the dust settled, UNC outscored UW 24-9 over the final eight minutes, 25 seconds of the opening half.
Kea had 18 by the half, while Cherry had 15 and Bailey tossed in 10. The trio had 43 of Carolina's 50 first-half points.
The Huskies were within 56-52 on a bucket from Henson, but Kea answered immediately with six points on the next two trips down the floor for Carolina and all of a sudden it was a double figure lead for the Tar Heels for most of the third period.
UNC extended its lead out to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Carolina improves to 28-4 all-time on the Grand Strand.
