Defense Sets Tone In Win Over App State
December 3, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina won its fourth game in a row with a 56-43 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday evening.
In the 23rd meeting between the two in-state rivals, Paris Kea and Jamie Cherry combined for 37 points and the Tar Heels limited the Mountaineers to only 17 points in the second half to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Head coach Sylvia Hatchell also registered career victory No. 996 on the night, moving ever so closely to 1,000 career victories in her Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame career.
The Tar Heels had an uncharacteristic off-shooting night scoring only 56 points, but their defense held Appalachian State to 29.2 shooting and nobody scored in double-figures. Pre Stanley led the Mountaineers with nine points.
Kea scored a game-high 20 points and Cherry added 17. Freshman Janelle Bailey had 11 rebounds and sophomore Taylor Koenen hauled in 10 boards.
Carolina held a slim 27-26 advantage at the intermission. The Tar Heels were limited to a season-low 27 first-half points, but a late three-pointer from Cherry gave Carolina the lead heading to the second half.
Cherry led all scorers with 11 points in the opening half, and in the process moved into 27th on the all-time scoring list passing La'Tangela Atkinson, who played from 2003-06, and scored 1,235 career points.
UNC has won 17 games in a row against Appalachian State going back to the 1977-78 season.
Carolina hosts Presbyterian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
