December 31, 2017 | Women's Basketball
TALLAHASSEE, Florida - Imani Wright scored a career-high 33 points to lead No. 13 Florida State to a 103-65 victory over North Carolina on Sunday in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both clubs.
Paris Kea paced North Carolina (10-4, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Janelle Bailey had 17 points and five rebounds, while Jamie Cherry finished with 10.
Wright set a school record with eight three-pointers as FSU was 10-of-20 from distance for the game. Shakayla Thomas had a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Nicki Ekhomu and Nausia Woolfolk added 19 and 13 points, respectively.
A dominating second quarter, and a commanding rebound advantage led the host Seminoles to its third-straight victory over the Tar Heels. FSU outscored Carolina 35-15 in the second stanza to break open a tight game, and owned the glass by a 47-22 margin.
Foul trouble didn't help the UNC cause either.
Bailey picked up two fouls in the first 85 seconds of the game, but despite missing a key piece to their puzzle the Tar Heels still managed an early 12-10 edge over the national-ranked Seminoles.
The first quarter was littered with 15 total fouls called - two each on Carolina's Bailey and Cherry - and featured nine lead changes and four ties, but it was a layup from Ekhomu that put FSU ahead 23-21 after 10 minutes.
Wright, who scored 22 points last season against Carolina, knocked down a trio of three-pointers in a span of one minute, 14 seconds to fuel a 22-5 run that gave the Seminoles a 45-26 lead.
FSU wound up with 35 points in the second quarter, the most allowed by Carolina all season, and led 58-36 at halftime.
The Seminoles extended their advantage to as many as 42 points in the second half.
Carolina visits Boston College on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on the Regional Sports Network, including Fox Sports Carolinas, and on the ESPN app.
