UNC Tops Clemson To Even ACC Record At 2-2
January 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina improved to 2-2 in ACC play with a 59-52 victory over Clemson Thursday night inside Carmichael Arena.
Senior Jamie Cherry led the Tar Heels (12-5, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 20 points, giving her an even 1,400 for her career. Freshman Janelle Bailey notched her fifth double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Paris Kea added 14 points and Taylor Koenen ripped down a game-high 12 rebounds to tie a career-high.
Alexis Carter scored a season-high 19 points for the Tigers (10-7, 0-4).
Clemson entered the game scoring only 40.3 points a game in conference play. That trend continued as the Tigers only made two buckets in the opening period, and trailed 20-4. Behind Bailey's six points and seven boards, Carolina closed the first period on a 14-0 run.
An uneven game flow in the second quarter saw Clemson creep back into the game, but Bailey made it 31-13 Tar Heels after a nifty turnaround with two minutes, 51 seconds until intermission.
Carolina surrendered its lowest point total in any half this season to lead comfortably, 32-15, at halftime.
Kea, limited to only six points in the first half, scored five-straight points to put Carolina ahead 39-21 in the third quarter.
Clemson scored more points in the third period (20) than it did in the first half (15), but a triple from Cherry late in the quarter secured a 47-35 lead going to the fourth.
Cherry opened the final stanza with another from distance and the Tar Heels held off the Tigers, who got within five points in the late stages of regulation.
UNC visits Wake Forest on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be carried on the Regional Sports Network, including locally on Fox Sports Carolinas, and on the ESPN app.
