Rivalry Week Begins Thursday With NC State

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina welcomes NC State to Carmichael Arena for a Thursday ACC tilt at 4Â p.m. UNC won its third-straight game on Sunday, 79-76, in overtime at Wake Forest to improve to 3-2 in the league, while NC State is 3-3 after a gritty, 60-56, win over Syracuse.

NC State owns a 54-50 in the most frequently played game in ACC women's basketball history. Each team won on their respective home courts last season, and the series stands at an even 3-3 over the last three years.
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman star Janelle Bailey notched career highs with 30 points and 19 rebounds in a thrilling 79-76 overtime victory over Wake Forest on Sunday. Bailey was 12-of-18 from the field, a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line and had four blocks in playing a season-high 44 minutes. Jamie Cherry added 20 points.
In overtime, Paris Kea (nine points) made perhaps the biggest shot of the game with a three-pointer to put UNC ahead 75-69. Cherry, who was 13-of-14 from the free throw line, iced it with four from the charity stripe in the final 27 seconds.
LAST MEETING WITH NC STATE
NC State won 80-60 behind 13 triples and seniors Dominique Wilson (19), Ashley Williams (18) and Jennifer Mathurin (13) combined for 50 points in their final game at Reynolds Coliseum on Feb. 24, 2017. Jamie Cherry scored a game-high 25 points to pace North Carolina. Paris Kea added 14. The Tar Heels played without Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts for a second game in a row.
NC State's 10 first-half three-pointers gave the Pack a 54-33 edge at the half.
BAILEY CONTINUES TO DOMINATE ACC ROOKIE AWARD
Janelle Bailey has been good all season for the Tar Heels. On Sunday, she was outstanding and because of that was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday. This is already the fifth honor this season for the native of Matthews, North Carolina.
Bailey scored a career-high 30 points and 19 rebounds in the Tar Heels' overtime win at Wake Forest. She is the only freshman this season to score 30 or more points, and her 19 boards tied for the most for an ACC player this season. Her 30 points were the most by a Tar Heel freshman since the 2013-14 season, while her 19 rebounds were the highest total by a Tar Heel since 2009. The rookie from Matthews, North Carolina, averaged 20.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Tar Heels.

Sylvia Hatchell won her 1,000th career game with a 79-63 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Hatchell, a 2013 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame inductee, is only the third women's basketball coach in history to reach 1,000 career victories, joining former Tennessee legend Pat Summitt and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski is the only men's coach among Division I basketball coaches to hit the 1,000 mark. Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma got his 1,000th victory later that night with a win over Oklahoma.

• Paris Kea is having a a phenomenal second season with the Tar Heels, ranking 4th in the ACC in both scoring at 18.9 points and assists with 6.3 per game, and also checks in 7th with 2.2 steals per outing.

• Kea scored 31 points against South Alabama, one shy of her career high, and handed out a career-high 11 assists against the Jaguars to notch her second career double-double. Scored career-high 33 points vs. Washington (12/17).
