January 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - NC State received a game-high 22 points from Kaila Easley during a 66-53 win over North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game Thursday from Carmichael Arena.
Paris Kea led North Carolina (13-6, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 16 points, and freshman Janelle Bailey had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Akela Maize had 13 points and Aislinn Konig added 11 for NC State (15-5, 4-3).
Jamie Cherry (eight points) drilled a pair of three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes, but a near five-minute scoreless stretch allowed NC State to grab an 18-10 edge.
State had a similar scoring issue in the second period, and five-straight points from Jaelynn Murray got UNC within 23-19.
Despite Bailey and Kea struggling to the tune of a combined 6-for-22 shooting in the first half, Carolina was only down 32-26 at intermission.
Carolina showed a renewed purpose out of the locker room, scoring the first seven points of the quarter to take a 33-32 lead, its first since midway into the first period. Later, a 7-0 run that was led by the substitution of Emily Sullivan in the front court saw Carolina increase its lead to 42-38. Sullivan knocked down two free throws and then fed Kea for a nifty three-point play.
NC State pieced together a 14-2 run to close the third quarter. Leslie canned a jumper to begin the fourth and it was a 54-44 lead for the visiting Wolfpack.
Rivalry week continues against No. 15 Duke on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Carolina will celebrate Sylvia Hatchell's 1000th career victory milestone with a ceremony before the game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early in order to not miss this monumental achievement in basketball history.
