UNC To Honor Coach Hatchell's 1K Victory On Sunday
January 19, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina Hall of Fame head women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell added another line to her amazing list of accomplishments when she won her 1,000th career game last month in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.Â
On Sunday against Carolina's fiercest rival Duke, the UNC athletic department will hold a celebration before tip-off against the Blue Devils to honor Hatchell on her milestone victory. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. inside Carmichael Arena.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to the game to ensure they don't miss the ceremony that will take place a few minutes before the Tar Heels and Blue Devils clash for the 96th time in what is widely considered the greatest rivalry in collegiate sports.
Hatchell, a member of the 2013 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame class, became only the third women's basketball coach in history to reach 1,000 victories with a 79-63 win over Grambling State on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017.
Later that day, Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma won his 1,000th game, and earlier this week Barbara Stevens from Division II Bentley (Mass.) made it an exclusive group of five coaches
Former Tennessee legend Pat Summitt and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer were the first two women to reach 1,000 wins. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Herb Magee (Thomas Jefferson University [Pa.]) are the only men's coaches to hit the mark.
