Virginia Holds Off Carolina, 82-70
January 25, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia - Five double-figures scorers helped Virginia continue its best start in Atlantic Coast Conference play in eight seasons with an 82-70 victory over North Carolina on Thursday inside John Paul Jones Arena.
Predicted to finish sixth in the preseason, the Cavaliers remain tied with top-10 programs Louisville and Notre Dame atop the conference standings at 7-1, the programs best mark since going 9-1 in 1999-00.
North Carolina (14-7, 4-4) had its own balanced attack with four in double figures. Janelle Bailey had a game-high 21 points, followed by 18 points from Paris Kea and 14 each from Jamie Cherry and Taylor Koenen.
Cherry reached a pair of milestone numbers with her 14 points, becoming just the sixth Tar Heel to register 200 career three-pointers and moved into 23rd on the all-time scoring list with 1,462 points.
Aliyah Huland El paced Virginia (14-7, 7-1) with a season-high 19 points. Lauren Moses added 14 off the bench, Dominique Toussaint offered up 13 and J'Kyra Brown and Briana Tinsley had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Carolina trailed by 13 points in the first quarter, but Leah Church provided instant offense off the bench with a quick three-pointer that trimmed the Tar Heel deficit to 27-23. Unfortunately that was the only shot attempt of the night for the ACC's top distance shooter.
As quickly as UNC seemed to regain its footing in the game, the Cavaliers responded with a 14-2 run to break it open, 41-25.
Huland El and Brown combined for 23 points to guide Virginia to a 47-32 lead at halftime.
Virginia had an answer every time Carolina would put a run together and led 69-50 after 30 minutes.
Koenen, who finished with her highest point total since December, scored the first five points of the fourth to give UNC hope of another improbable comeback. However, UNC ran out of time only getting within 78-70 in the final 80 seconds.
Carolina visits No. 5 Notre Dame next Thursday at 7 p.m.
