Cherry Drops Panthers With Game-Winning Triple
January 7, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Jamie Cherry made a game-winning three-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation to lift North Carolina to a 68-67 victory over Pitt on Sunday from Carmichael Arena.
The Tar Heels trailed for most of the second half, but Cherry's fifth triple of the day put an exclamation point on a ferocious comeback that saw Carolina trail by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter.
Cherry's game-high 22 points equaled her total scoring output in the first two conference games, both of which Carolina came out on the losing end. Freshman Janelle Bailey and junior Paris Kea scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to help UNC improve to 1-2 against the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Jasmine Whitney had 21 points to pace Pitt (8-8, 0-3). Kalista Walters notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Yacine Diop had 15 points before picking up her fifth foul midway through the fourth quarter.
North Carolina (11-5, 1-2) found room to work inside the paint, receiving 10 of its 14 first-quarter points from Bailey and classmate Jaylynn Murray. However, the Panthers scored the last six points of the opening stanza to grab an early 16-14 edge over the Tar Heels.
Bailey scored 12 first-half points to lead all scorers. She put UNC ahead 25-20 midway through the second quarter, and late in the stanza it was Kea's mid-range jumper that gave the Heels a 33-30 lead at halftime.
Pitt got hot in the third quarter making six-straight shots that fueled a 12-2 run. Diop's runner put the Panthers ahead 44-38, with five minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the period.
The lead grew to 60-52 in the fourth, but a barrage of three-pointers from both Cherry and freshman Leah Church (eight points) tied the game at 60-60 with exactly five minutes remaining in regulation.
Whitney gave Pitt a 67-65 edge with 51 seconds left. Cherry would win the game with 12.8 seconds to go by giving UNC its first lead since it was 38-35 in the early stages of the third.
Taylor Koenen registered her eighth double-figure rebounding total of the season with 10, while Kea's 13 points marked the 29th straight outing she has scored 10 or more points for the Tar Heels.
