UNC Hosting 'Be the Match' Event Thursday Night
February 20, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's basketball team is proud to host a 'Be the Match' event on Thursday when the Tar Heels host Syracuse at Carmichael Arena at 7 p.m.
Be the Match' manages the largest and most diverse bone marrow registry in the world which aims to cure life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia. For patients with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases, a marrow transplant can be a cure.
In order for it to work, the donor and recipient have to be very close genetic matches. It's more complicated than blood types. 70 percent of all patients don't have a matching donor in their family.
How do you sign up?
• The registration process takes less than 10 minutes.
• First, you'll fill out a health history form to ensure that you are eligible for donation.
• Then, you swab your cheek to provide a sample that Be The Match analyzes to learn your genetic tissue type.
• Once your sample is processed, you will be listed on the registry as an available donor to anyone in need until the age of 61.
Free t-shirts will be given out to the first 200 students arriving for Thursday's game against the Orange.
