Kea Shines In ACC Tournament Win Over BC, 69-64
February 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, North Carolina - First team All-ACC guard Paris Kea grew up a short drive from the Greensboro Coliseum and was a prep star at nearby Page High School, but had never played a game inside the arena until Wednesday morning in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Kea offered up 28 points in what she later described as "a dream come true" in playing so well inside a building that she frequently visited during her childhood watching this very tournament.
ACC Freshman of the Year Janelle Bailey added 16 points and 13 rebounds in leading 12th seed North Carolina to a 69-64 victory over 13th seed Boston College.
North Carolina (15-15) will face 5th seed NC State on Thursday at 11 a.m. The 23rd ranked Wolfpack swept the Tar Heels during the regular season, winning 66-53 at Chapel Hill on Jan. 18 and 73-54 at Raleigh on Feb. 11.
Despite 20 points in the first half by Kea, Carolina only led 31-28 at intermission. Taylor Ortlepp kept Boston College (7-23) in the game with 14 of her team-leading 23 points before halftime.
Bailey missed all seven of her shots in the opening 20 minutes, but regrouped with 12 points alone in the third quarter to keep the Tar Heels in front, 51-46.
A 10-0 fourth-quarter run lifted Carolina to a 61-49 edge over the Eagles, who got back within 65-62 in the final 1:11. Jamie Cherry and Bailey salted it away with four free throws in the final 38 seconds.
The victory is the 62nd ACC Tournament win in program history, extending the record held by the Tar Heels, who have won the event nine times.
