SAN DIEGO-- And the freshman shall lead them.
A game-winning goal by freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ball (Dallas, Texas) and a pair of tallies by freshman forward Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) lifted the third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over 16th-ranked UCLA Friday night in the University of San Diego/Puma Invitational. In the process, the Tar Heels presented head coach Anson Dorrance with his 450th career coaching victory as the UNC women's coach.
Playing without starters Lorrie Fair and Leslie Gaston, out with injuries, and with starter Susan Bush still limited by a knee inury, the Tar Heels were less than intimidating against the 7-2 Bruins in the first half, outshooting UCLA only 6-4 en route to a 0-0 tie at the intermission. But Dorrance must have given one of his better halftime talks in recent memory as the Heels dominated the second half, scoring four times and outshooting the Bruins 10-1 in the second 45 minutes.
It was Ball who finally put the Tar Heels on top before a crowd of 2,511 as her shot beat UCLA goalkeeper CiCi Peterson into the lower left corner of the goal 11:27 into the second half. Sophomore defender Danielle Borgman assisted Ball on the play. The goal came on Ball's only shot of the night.
Ball stayed in the game for the Tar Heels and set up the second goal as well. At the 70:55 mark, the freshman extended her body and launched an arching pass with her foot high in the air that found junior forward Meredith Florance. Florance knew what to do with it as she rocketed a shot high into the right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
The rest was up to freshman sensation Patrick, whose uncanny nose for the goal, is quick becoming something of legend. Patrick scored two goals (on her only two shots of the night) just 56 seconds apart to turn the game into a rout. At the 84:28 mark, she scored off a corner kick by senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell. Just 56 seconds later she tallied the final goal on a breakaway. Patrick now has 11 goals on the season in the Tar Heels' 10 games.
The win improved Carolina to 450-19-11 in Dorrance's 21 seasons as the UNC head women's soccer coach. Dorrance was also 172-65-21 in 12 years as the Tar Heel men's soccer coach from 1977-88.
The win improved the Tar Heels on the season to 8-2. UNC will play the host Toreros on Sunday at 12 noon P.D.T. on the final day of the USD/Puma Invitational.
