CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina recently hired Carlos Garcia as the assistant coach for the men's tennis team. For the past five seasons, Garcia has been an assistant men's tennis coach at the University of Tennessee.
Following the 1998-99 season at Tennessee, Garcia was a finalist for the 1998-99 Assistant Coach of the Year award. Garcia also helped lead Tennessee to finish with a ranking of 13th in the nation during the 1998-99 season.
Garcia, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., has also coached on the ATP Tour, working with Chris Woodruff, whose ATP rank has been as high as 29th in singles.
Garcia is a 1986 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he played tennis from 1982-1986 under Coach Mike DePalmer Sr. During Garcia's senior year, the Tennessee team won the 1986 SEC Championship. Garcia was also an All-Academic SEC pick in 1985 and 1986.
"We are so excited to have someone with Carlos' experience in our program," said Head Coach Sam Paul. "Obviously, being one of the finalists for assistant coach of the year shows that Carlos has been recognized by his peers and he will bring a wealth of experience to our program."
Said Garcia: "It is truly an honor to be part of this North Carolina program and work alongside one of the most talented coaches in the country, Sam Paul. This team has several strong returning players and a freshman class that can be competitive with any class in the nation."
