CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team suffered its first home-field loss of the season Tuesday evening, 3-2 in overtime against Wake Forest. Junior Jenny Everett scored on a penalty corner with 4:47 remaining in the 15-minute sudden-death overtime to give the visiting Demon Deacons the win.
Fourth-ranked UNC fell to 10-3 on the season, while seventh-ranked Wake Forest improved to 12-1. The Demon Deacons also won the teams' first matchup of the season, 2-0 on Oct. 2 in Winston-Salem, in a game that counted in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. (Tuesday's game did not.)
"This game was very typical of what our last meeting was like," Wake Forest coach Jennifer Averill said. "We were stronger in the first half, but Carolina played stronger in the second."
