CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In UNC Coach Karen Shelton's 400th career game at UNC, the University of North Carolina field hockey team topped Richmond 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Carolina improves its record to 13-4 on the season, while Richmond falls to 9-8.
The Tar Heels struck first on a Holly Huff goal with 22:53 remaining in the first half. Huff also recorded two assists on the day. The first half scoring was capped by Jana Toepel who scored on a penalty corner with 3:22 left in the half. Carolina made up for a sluggish start with four goals in the second half. Toepel opened the half with her second goal of the day. UNC back Abby Martin followed Toepel's goal with a penalty stroke giving the Heels a 4-0 lead with 23:39 remaining in the game. The final two goals were both scored unassisted by Junior Kristen McCann, her 12th and 13th goals of the season. In addition, Erin Cox totaled two points with two assists in the game.
The game was the Tar Heel's last home contest of the season, and also marked the last game in Chapel Hill for Senior Nicole Frey. Frey upped her career shutout total to 12.5 by shutting out the Spiders today. "As a captain and leader, I have had no one better than Nicole Frey," said Shelton. "She has played such a significant role with her vocal leadership and motivation. I am very proud of her." About her career, Frey remarked, "I have had five great years here. I couldn't ask for anything more."
The Tar Heels will next play seventh-ranked Old Dominion Saturday in Norfolk, VA. Carolina earlier defeated ODU 1-0 this season on September 18th.
