CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore midfielder Noz Yamauchi tallied two goals and three assists as the No. 21-ranked University of North Carolina men's soccer team defeated High Point University, 6-0, Wednesday night at Fetzer Field. The victory marked the third consecutive shutout win for the Tar Heels, following a 4-0 win over UNC Asheville last Wednesday and a 3-0 win at NC State Sunday afternoon.
Carolina outshot the Panthers, 28-7, and dominated from the very beginning of the match. The Tar Heels scored three of their four first-half goals off corner kicks. Yamauchi, who had a hand in five of UNC's six goals on the night, kicked the corner kick in each case.
Daniel Jackson scored the first goal, taking Matt Laycock's pass after Yamauchi's corner kick and scoring at the 10:58 mark. Just over two minutes later, at 13:02, Chris Carrieri scored off a beautiful pass by Caleb Norkus on a fast break that sliced through the Panther defense.
UNC made it 3-0 when David Popp headed a Yamauchi corner kick into the net at the 18:45 mark. The Heels continued their blistering pace in the game's first half as Michael Bucy headed a Yamauchi corner kick to David Popp, who scored at the 32:03 mark. Yamauchi added an unassisted goal from the top of the box at the 68:23 mark and scored again at 84:56 off a Matt Crawford assist on a free kick.
With the win, Carolina improves to 11-4 on the season. High Point falls to 8-8. Carolina returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to face Atlantic Coast Conference rival and No. 4-ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
