DURHAM, N.C.-The second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team got back on a winning track Sunday with a 3-0 victory at 12th-ranked Duke, a day after losing 2-0 at Wake Forest. The Tar Heels are now 9-2 on the season, 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke is 7-5 overall. (Sunday's game did not count in the ACC standings.)
The win was the Tar Heels' 42nd consecutive victory over Duke, in a rivalry that dates back to 1971.
A penalty stroke goal by sophomore Abby Martin at 30:51 in the first half put UNC up 1-0 over Duke at halftime. Martin added another goal, this one from the field, at 20:28 in the second half. Junior Kristen McCann scored the Tar Heels' third goal with 7:15 remaining in the game.
"In yesterday's game, we played more as individuals but today we worked as a team," said Martin, who leads UNC in scoring with 10 goals and has 21 points on the season. "Winning today will help us go into next week strong."
The Tar Heels host Radford Wednesday evening at 7:30 at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
