Women's Golf Squad Hosts Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's women's golf team will play host to 14 teams in this year's Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational which will take place October 8-10 at the Governors Club, a par 72, 5,909-yard layout. The 54-hole event will follow a format of 18 holes played each day. Tee times will begin at 12:00 noon Friday and Saturday and at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. The public is invited to attend and there is no admission fee.
This year's tournament will feature several of the top players in the collegiate ranks. Carolina's Marcy Newton, an All-America last year two-time All-ACC selection, has won two tournament titles during her collegiate career. Duke brings in a couple of all-star candidates, Beth Bauer and Candy Hannemann. Bauer was an All-America and All-ACC performer last year and won the North and South Amateur this past summer. Hanneman, the defending champion of the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational, was an All-ACC performer last year and was the runner-up at the NCAA Championships.
In addition to the Carolina, the other participating teams include Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, Memphis, South Carolina, South Florida, Tennessee, Tulane, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. Duke won last year's Tar Heel posting an 854 total while Carolina was the runner-up. Duke's Hannemann was the individual champion with an four-under-par 212.
Carolina opened its fall campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala. The Tar Heels fired a 918 total. Senior Marcy Newton led the Tar Heels with a 224 total and tied for sixth place. Britta Olson tied for 14th place with a 228 while Heather Angell tied for 25th with a 231 total, Abby Spector tied for 35th at 235 and Beth Lever tied for 54th at 244.
