Duke Grabs First-Round Lead Of Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Duke University, the top-ranked team in the country, fired a 304 during the first round of the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational, to grab the early lead. The Blue Devils shot a 16-over par for the day. The Tennessee Volunteers find themselves five shots behind Duke after shooting a team score of 309 which was 21-over par. The University of North Carolina-Greensboro is in third place after carding a first round team score of 310, one stroke behind the second place Volunteers. Auburn University and the University of South Carolina round out the top five after rounds of 311 and 313 respectively.
Candy Hannemann led the attack for the Blue Devils by firing a first round score of 72 which leaves her at even par. Hannemann grabbed the lead in individual competition by shooting the only par score of the day. Lotta Jonson from the University of North Carolina-Greesboro is alone in second place after carding a first round score of 73. She is one-over par after the first day and one shot behind Hannemann for the tournament lead. Auburn's Danielle Downey and Kelly Hanwell from the University of Arkansas are tied for third after firing 2-over par 74's. There are currently five individuals who are tied for fifth after posting 75's for the first round.
In individual competition, North Carolina's Abby Spector and Heather Angell lead the Tar Heels after posting rounds of 80. This leaves them at 8-over par for the tournament and currently tied with three other players for eighth place. Sophomore Beth Lever is nine-over par for the tournament after shooting a first round score of 81. She is tied with two other players for forty-third in the tournament. Senior Marcy Newton and junior Britta Olson are both tied for forty-sixth after carding first round totals of 82. Sarah Turcotte, who is playing as an individual, shot a 14-over par 86 for the first round.
As a team the Tar Heels shot a 323 for the day. They find themselves in eleventh place, one stroke behind Vanderbilt University and 19 strokes back of tournament leader Duke. Six of the 15 participating teams are currently in the Top 25 of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
The second round the tournament will take place tomorrow. The tournament is being held at the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC. This is a par 72 course comprised of 5,909 yards.
The Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational is a Rolex Collegiate Tour Event.
