CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Duke, the nation's number one ranked women's golf team, continued their dominance in team competition Saturday at the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational as they shot a combined 292 second-round team score to increase their two-day lead to 16 strokes over the University of Tennessee. The Blue Devils score of 292 bettered their first day total by twelve strokes, as they go into the final round with a team score of 596 (+20). The University of Tennessee follows in second place with a two-day total of 612 (+36), and Wake Forest University rounds out the top three with a team score of 615 (+39). The University of North Carolina is in sixth place as they knocked off twenty strokes from their first round total (323) to secure a second round score of 303, and a two-day score of 626 (+50).
Individual competition showcased Tar Heel senior Marcy Newton as she recorded a collegiate career best one-round score of 69, which also leads all individual scores for the tournament. Newton's previous collegiate best was a 70, which she amassed twice during her junior year campaign. Duke's Candy Hannemann maintained her overall lead with a second-round score of 73, but is tied with Auburn's Danielle Downey after she shot a 71 for her second-round score. Both golfers are at one-over (145) for their two-day totals. Tied for third place are Tennessee's Young-A Yang (76-73-149) and Duke's Beth Bauer (76-73-149). Rounding out the top five are Lotta Johnson from UNC-Greensboro and Tina Schneeberger from Tennessee, as they are tied for fifth place with two-day total scores of 150 (+6). Newton's 69 moved her into a three-way tie with Duke's Kristina Engstrom and Amie Lehman, as they all maintain a two-day total of 151 (+7).
Individual performances for North Carolina, alongside Newton, include sophomore Heather Angell's score of 77, after a first-round score of 80. Angell's two-day total score of 157 puts her tied for 26th place overall. Junior Britta Olson also shot a 77 on Saturday to improve on her first-round score of 82, putting her overall score of 159 at a tie for 38th place. Abby Spector is tied for 40th place after scoring 80 for both the first and second rounds. Beth Lever rounds out the Tar Heel golfers, as she sits tied for 54th place after her 83 on Saturday giving her a two-day total of 164.
The final round will begin Sunday, October 10th, at 7:30 a.m. The tournament is being held at the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC. This is a par 72 course comprised of 5,909 yards.
