CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The Tar Heel softball team, coming off its best season since 1993, added a talented trio of prospects to its roster during the fall signing period. Emily Price, Natashalyn Snipes and Dionne Streete all will join the Carolina program in the fall of 2000.
"I'm extremely excited about this particular group of athletes," said UNC coach Donna Papa, who is in her 15th year in Chapel Hill. "This is a versatile and athletic class, which will add outstanding speed and power to our lineup. Additionally, these players will strengthen our depth up the middle.
Price, from Decatur, Ill., plays shortstop and second base at Eisenhower High. She has earned all-conference honors the past three years and last spring was named second-team all-state. She holds school records for home runs, hits, doubles and slugging percentage, and her career total of 50 home runs is equal to the Illinois state high school record. Her team won regional championships in 1997, '98 and '99.
Snipes, from Durham, N.C., plays shortstop and outfield at Northern High. An all-conference and all-tournament honoree, she also plays volleyball and softball and has been named Northern's most versatile athlete. She plays ASA softball for the Durham Dominators.
Streete, from Pembroke Pines, Fla., plays shortstop and third base at Flanagan High, where she has earned all-tournament and honorable mention all-conference honors. She plays ASA softball for the Davie Power.
The Tar Heels, 40-22 in 1999, open the 2000 season on Feb. 10 against Elon.
