Chapel Hill, N.C. - South Carolina scored three second-half goals after trailing, 1-0, at halftime to rally and defeat No. 18 North Carolina, 3-2, in collegiate men's soccer action Saturday night at Fetzer Field. UNC thus completes its regular season with a record of 11-5-1. With its victory, South Carolina is 10-6-2 on the year.
The Tar Heels outshot the Gamecocks, 16-9, in the match pand had nine corner kicks to USC's zero. South Carolina took advantage of a lack of defensive intensity by the Heels, however, to score three goals in a 15-minute span of the second half. UNC rallied furiously and pulled within one goal in the final minutes but could not tie the score.
Chris Carrieri put the Tar Heels on top early with a goal at 13:47 with a tough shot off assists from Caleb Norkus and Joey DiSalvo. The 1-0 UNC lead held until the 51:05 mark, when USC's John Harr took advantage of a UNC defensive miscue, taking a pass from David Testo and putting it into the net at point-blank range to tie the game at 1-1.
Six minutes later, Testo scored an unassisted goal at 57:19, slicing through the UNC defense to find an open shot. Tim Glowienka scored at 65:40 for a 3-1 USC lead off assists from Ryan O'Neill and Joey Worthen.
The Tar Heels did their best to get back into the game, mounting a furious rally in the final 20 minutes of the game. DiSalvo, playing in his final regular-season home game, scored an unassisted goal from 28 yards out, floating a shot over USC keeper Henry Ring to make it 3-2 USC. Carrieri nearly tied the score when his header caromed off the crossbar at 80:22, but the Gamecock defense stiffened.
Ring played extremely well in the goal for USC, saving seven shots.
North Carolina returns to action Thursday against Clemson in the ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C.
