CHAPEL HILL, N.C - Third-ranked North Carolina got goals from three different players Sunday afternoon to defeat 15th-ranked Wake Forest 3-0 in the championship game of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament before a crowd of 3,258 at Fetzer Field.
With the victory, the Tar Heels claimed their 11th successive ACC championship and their 12th in the last 13 years. The win was Carolina's 13th in a row this season and lifted the Tar Heels to 19-2 on the season. Wake Forest, which made its first appearance in the ACC championship game in only its sixth year as a varsity sport, fell to 15-6 on the season. Carolina earned an automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA Tournament with the victory. Wake Forest is virtually guaranteed of an at-large bid to the 48-team tournament when the bids are announced at 10 p.m. tonight.
The Tar Heels got on the scoreboard first when sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel converted a nifty passing combination into a 1-0 lead at the 24:30 mark. Sophomore defender Danielle Borgman made a strong run up the right side and served a long ball that sophomore Anne Remy tracked down just before it was going over the end line. Remy served the ball back to Kluegel whose shot from 10 yards out on the left found on the lower right corner of the net. It was the seventh goal of the season for Kluegel.
At the 56:24 mark, UNC freshman forward Kim Patrick added her team-leading 14th goal as an insurance tally. 1999 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament Most Valuable Player Lindsay Stoecker, a senior defender, served a ball from the Tar Heels' half of the pitch that was forwarded on by junior midfielder Raven McDonald. Patrick broke past the defense to go one-on-one against Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan. Patrick's shot from 12 yards out straight on eluded Regan and gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead. Patrick is tied for the ACC lead in goals scored with Duke's Sherrill Kester at 14.
Junior defender Kalli Kamholz finished off the scoring the for the Tar Heels at the 70:24 mark. Senior defender Lorrie Fair took a point blank shot that was saved by Wake Forest field player Sarah Kate Noftsinger. The ball ricocheted into the air and Kamholz headed home the rebound for her third goal of the season.
The Carolina defense did the rest as UNC recorded its sixth straight shutout win. The defense, which includes a trio of first-team All-ACC defenders in Fair, Stoecker and Borgman, and the second-team All-ACC goalkeeper in freshman Jenni Branam, has allowed only five goals in its last 16 games. By contrast, UNC had allowed six goals in the first five games of the season.
UNC took 21 shots on the afternoon and the Deacons five. Carolina had 11 corner kicks and Wake Forest had three. Regan made nine saves for the Demon Deacs while Branam had three for Carolina.
The 1999 All-ACC Tournament Team will be released by the ACC Office in Greensboro on Monday morning.
