CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Rick Steinbacher, a 1993 University of North Carolina graduate and a four-year letterwinner on the Tar Heel football team, has joined the UNC football staff as assistant to the athletic director. Steinbacher will begin his new position Jan. 3, 2000.
"I'm extremely happy to have Rick Steinbacher rejoin our football program," Carolina head coach Carl Torbush said. "I recruited Rick when he was in high school, coached him as a student-athlete at this University and have watched him become very successful in the business world. It makes me proud and excited to have him become a part of our staff and part of a program he truly loves. He'll be a tremendous asset to our football program, University and community."
Steinbacher will assist with NCAA rules compliance training for student-athletes and coaches, serve as UNC's liaison to the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, coordinate programs that educate student-athletes and their families about agents and handle other administrative duties as assigned by athletic director Dick Baddour and the head coach.
"I've always considered myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend Carolina and to have played football for Carl Torbush, and now I'm extremely happy to be rejoining the Carolina football family," Steinbacher said. "I strongly believe in the values and commitment to academic and athletic excellence that this University and this coaching staff stands for, and I look forward to representing that commitment on this campus."
Steinbacher returns to his alma mater after working as a Vice President of Account Development with Tar Heel Sports Marketing since March 1999, while he also had been affiliated with the Tar Heel Sports Network as a sideline reporter and color analyst for UNC football games for the past six seasons. From February 1994-March 1999, Steinbacher worked as an account executive with Procter and Gamble in Charlotte, N.C.
In four years as an inside linebacker at Carolina, Steinbacher made 29 starts and finished with 307 total tackles. The team's second-leading tackler in both 1992 and 1993, Steinbacher was named third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference and a team co-captain as a senior.
