The North Carolina Women's Soccer team scored a goal in each half to take a 2-0 victory over the Penn St. Nittany Lions in semifinal action in the NCAA Women's College Cup in San Jose, Calif.
The Tar Heels (23-2-0) will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 3:00 p.m. ET (ESPN) on Sunday. Notre Dame topped host team Santa Clara 1-0 in Friday's second semifinal.
UNC's win avenges a 3-2 loss to Penn St. (21-4-1) at Fetzer Field on Sept. 12.
Anne Remy scored the first Tar Heel goal at the 32:35 mark in the first half. Susan Bush made a brilliant dribble through four defenders, then slotted the ball to Kim Patrick in the center of the field. Patrick sent the ball to Remy, who scored her 13th goal of the season. The goal was also her 6th game-winning goal.
Patrick put the game away on a late goal off an assist from, of all people, goalie Jenni Branam. With a 25-mph wind behind her, Branam launched a rocket down field that PSU goalie Emily Oleksiuk misjudged, leaving Patrick an open goal. Her insurance goal at the 88:54 mark put Carolina into the NCAA's final game for the 17th time in 18 years.
ranam, despite just four saves, was brilliant in goal. With 25 minutes left in the match Penn St.'s Christie Welsh got behind UNC's defense, but Branam stopped her shot from in close. Less than three minutes later Courtney Lawson broke free, but ranam cut off her angle and forced a shot that missed high.
Carolina held a 24-8 edge in shots while getting eleven corner kicks to one for the Nittany Lions. Oleksiuk recorded eight saves for PSU, which was shut out for just the second time this season.
The win was Carolina's 17th in a row since a 1-0 loss to host-team Santa Clara on Sept. 24 at a tournament in Durham, N.C. The Tar Heels now have a 60-3 record in NCAA Tournament competition.
