CLINTON, S.C. - Former University of North Carolina men's tennis coach Allen Morris, who served at Carolina from 1980-93, announced this past Monday that he will retire from his current position as director of athletics at Presbyterian College at the conclusion of the school year.
Morris returned to his alma mater in 1993 as Director of Presbyterian College's Scotsman Club following a distinguished career as Director of Tennis and Head Men's Tennis Coach at North Carolina. Prior to coming to UNC in 1980, Morris had spent over 20 years as a vice president for personnel at a leading textile company in Greensboro, N.C.
A year after returning to Presbyterian to head up the fund-raising efforts for athletics, he was promoted to the position as the Director of Athletics. During his tenure and under his skilled leadership, the Athletic Department has won the last two South Atlantic Conference Athletic Excellence Awards, given annually to the top overall athletic program. Further, his stewardship over this period of time has been a prime factor in Presbyterian's 26 South Atlantic Conference championships, 23 berths in NCAA Division II national tournament play, and 17 SAC Coach of the Year Awards.
Morris took a special interest in women's athletics at PC and worked to strengthen programming, staffing and funding in this area. He led the planning for new soccer and football stadiums, oversaw the development of a new complex for women's softball, and made critical decisions that resulted in the rejuvenation of PC's football legacy.
Allen and his wife, Dorothy, plan to remain in Clinton for their retirement after Morris steps down from his current position on June 30, 2000.
