June 21, 1999 | Baseball
Sunday's action: Maryland (14-18, 5-9) junior lefty Joe Hart pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Terps to a 6-0 win over N.C. State (29-15, 7-8) at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C. This was the first time State had been shut out at Doak Field since a 14-0 loss to Clemson on April 15, 1995. The game also broke an 11-game Terrapin winless streak in Raleigh. Rodney Ormond (4-4) took the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 6.0 innings. The Terps led just 1-0 after seven innings, but put the game away with a 3-run eighth that was keyed by Jason Mohap's two-run double. Craig Munroe capped off the Maryland scoring with a 9th-inning home run... The Clemson Tigers (23-17, 5-6) scored five runs in their last two at bats to post a 7-5 win over Duke (21-22, 2-11) at Tiger Field in Clemson, S.C. Doug Roper (1-0) got his first career win, while Teddy Sullivan (0-2) suffered the loss for Duke. Clemson trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh before rallying with three runs to tie the game at 5-5. Khalil Greene's two-run double was the big blow for the Tigers. Bradley LeCroy then led off the eighth with a single, stole second and came all the way around when catcher Ed Conrey's throw went into centerfield and Duke centerfielder Gideon Thompson bobbled the ball. Patrick Boyd scored the Tiger's final run on a fielder's choice by Derek Borgert. Kurt Bultmann's two doubles enabled him to tie Gary Burnham's career-record for doubles at 77. In addition, Jason Harris tied the school record for walks in a game with five... No. 5 Miami (28-9) scored six runs in the first inning, then held on to edge top-ranked Florida St. (38-5, 14-1) 8-7 at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Miami, which took two of the three games, will entertain FSU in a three-game set at Coral Gables next weekend. The Hurricanes batted around in their six-run first, then saw the Seminoles come back to tie the game at 6-6 with a six-run fifth. The key Seminole blow was third baseman Kevin Cash's first career grand slam homer. Miami got single runs in the eighth and ninth to go up 8-6, but FSU did not go quietly. John Halliday doubled in the bottom of the ninth, with Cash singling him in to make it 8-7. Chris Smith grounded out with a runner on third for the game's final out. Vince Vazquez (3-1) got the win in 2.1 innings of relief. Michael Neu got his seventh save of the season, while Chris Chavez took the loss for FSU... Georgia Tech (28-12, 9-6) bounced back from two horrible games to record an 8-6 win over Wake Forest (28-11, 11-6) at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. Mark Teixeira had a home run and four RBI, and Adam Blue added a three-run shot as the Yellow Jackets salvaged the last game of the three-game series.
