CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's soccer head coach Elmar Bolowich announced Tuesday the hiring of Oliver Weiss, an assistant coach at William & Mary for the last three seasons, as Carolina's new assistant coach. Weiss helped lead William & Mary to three NCAA Tournament berths and a record of 49-17-5 in his three seasons there.
"I'm very excited by the prospect of working with a coach as talented as Oliver," Bolowich said Tuesday. "His strong points are his knowledge of the game and his people-management skills, both of which are outstanding. I'm very confident that he'll do a great job here and add a great deal to our program."
Weiss will start his duties at Carolina on May 1 and replaces Jay Howell, who left the Carolina program to take over as the director of coaching and director of youth programs for the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) in Raleigh. Like Howell, Weiss will be a full-time assistant coach and will assist in every aspect of the Tar Heel program, including practice, game operations and management, recruiting, fund raising, public relations and conditioning.
A 1988 graduate of the University of Richmond, Weiss was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as a player and earned All-South Atlantic honors his senior year.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in history, Weiss coached the Richmond Capitols Soccer Club to a 42-0 record and eight state championships from 1988-95. The Capitols won the Eastern Regional title and earned a bid to the National Youth Championships in 1995. Weiss also coached at Patrick Henry High School from 1993 to 1995, leading the boys' varsity team to its first winning season in history.
In 1995, Weiss was an assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire, where he also took part in several youth clinics, tournaments and team fund raisers.
A former NCSAA High School All-America as a player, Weiss was honored as the 1995 Virginia, East Region (NCSAA) and Region I (United States Youth Soccer) Coach of the Year. He played professional soccer for the Richmond Kickers of the USISL in 1993 and for TSV Freisen Hanigsen, a German Fourth Division club, in 1988-89.
