WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of North Carolina Gymnastics teams opened its 1999 season with a win on the road against William & Mary. The Tar Heels downed the Tribe 188.70 - 187.150 at the Sunday afternoon meet.
Carolina sophomore Brooke Wilson started the season strong placing first on the floor exercise (9.70) and the vault (9.775) and claiming the all-around title with a total score of 38.475. The Tar Heels swept the bars with senior Jennifer DeLuca placing first with a score of 9.80, Wilson claiming second with a 9.725 score, and senior Shelley Austin taking third with a 9.675 score. Austin also finished second on the balance beam with a score of 9.625. William & Mary was led by sophomore Brandee Ground who placed second in the all-around with a 37.00 total. She was followed by senior Becky Johnson who completed the day with a 36.825 all-around total, good for third place.
The Tar Heels are in action next when they travel to the George Washington Invitational this Saturday at 12:00 pm.
