CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Chris Carrieri scored two goals and fellow freshman Noz Yamauchi tallied three assists as the University of North Carolina defeated High Point University, 4-1, Wednesday evening in collegiate men's soccer action at Fetzer Field. Freshman Daniel Jackson also scored for the Heels, who broke a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-4 on the season. High Point fell to 6-6.
The game also broke a two-game scoreless streak for Carolina, which hadn't scored since a 3-2 win at Winthrop Sept. 23. Carolina dominated throughout the game, outshooting High Point, 25-4, and tallying nine corner kicks to the Panthers' one.
Carolina got on the scoreboard early when sophomore forward Caleb Norkus scored his first goal since the Dayton game Sept. 18. Norkus volleyed a Yamauchi cross into the net at the 7:11 mark. UNC grabbed a 2-0 lead at the 25:26 mark when Yamauchi tapped an indirect kick from the top of the box to Jackson, who scored in the lower right corner of the goal. Carolina grabbed a 3-0 lead that it would hold at halftime when Carrieri headed in an Eddie Robinson pass off a Yamauchi corner kick at 48:17.
High Point played better in the second half and controlled possession in the early part of the second stanza. At the 61:21 mark, Shane Curran tapped an indirect kick to Kelly Harris, who drilled the ball in the net for a 3-1 margin. Carolina made it 4-1 at 78:12 when Carrieri scored again off passes from C.J. Steffen and Brian Mascia.
